Students must attend two semesters at RAU consisting of a two-hour contact session per week (18:00 - 20:00).
Practical training in counselling skills takes place through individual supervision and the use of video tapes.

Distance LEARNING: (CBR 103)

  • Theoretical background is presented by means of interactive material.
  • Students must attend one five-day practical workshop in counselling sills. These workshops are only held at RAU provided at least 20 students are able to attend.

AFTER COMPLETION
Successful students will receive a certificate and could enrol for the Diploma in General Counselling. (Year 3 of specialised course in counselling).

MATRIC: NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICAT - GRADE 12

A Matric qualification is the key to success and the key to the future. Open Learning Academy offers this key that can open doors for you. You can obtain this essential qualification through:

  • Distance education (study in your own time). (Students have an option to enrol for only one or two subjects or the entire matric.)

SUBJECTS TO CHOOSE FROM

  • Select six (6) subjects which prepare you best for the career you with to pursue.
  • You are compelled to include in your choice one of the languages as a first language (only students whose home language is an African language may study an African language on 1st HG and/or Afrikaans 1st HG or 2nd HG).

CHOOSING YOUR SUJECTS

Please note that subjects must be studied in specific combinations. A total of six subjects must be selected out of four different groups:

  • Both languages in group A, one as first language on the Higher Grade (HG) and the other as Second language on the Higher Grade (HG). Students whose home language is an African language may study one of the African languages as their first language.
  • The six subjects must be selected from at least four groups - languages include.
  • A maximum of three languages may be taken.

EXAMINATIONS
Examinations take place annually October/ November. You will receive credit for each subject passed. During February of the following year, a supplementary examination may be written in subjects that were failed during the preceding October/ November examinations. Please note the following two requirements:

  • A candidate may not rewrite more than three subjects
  • A candidate must have obtained at least 30% in each of the subjects during the preceding examinations to qualify for a supplementary examination.

REMEMBER: Several Education Departments don't allow private candidates to write supplementary examinations. Students must contact the Education Department in their Province in this regard (see page 3).

EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

  • If possible all six subjects must be passed in one examination period.
  • Part-time candidates (distance education are required to pass at least three subjects at a first examination and the remaining subjects at the following examination. During one of these two examinations at least two HG subjects must be passed (40% n each), or else it will not be recognised for the purpose of Matriculation exemption.
  • The average pass mar for all six subjects must be 45% You must obtain an aggregate of 950 marks for all the subjects, i.e. 45% per subject average.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
Open Learning Academy provides you with the study material you require, and prepares you for the examination which you are going to write. However, you do not write the examination at Open Learning Academy, Examination entries are not done at Open Learning Academy but at the local secretary or centre.
Students are advised to contact the Education Department (see page 3) to confirm the closing date for the examination.

NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED
You will write the examination at the centre where you have entered. You identify document must be shown.

Standard 10 candidates who are permitted to rewrite subjects at the supplementary examination in February, must enter for the particular examination before the dates set by the different Departments of Education.

Students must register for the examinations before the closing date. Registration is done at the Department of Education of the various provinces. Please contact your nearest Provincial offices (see telephone numbers). Registration for examinations remain the responsibility of the students.

Important: Please note that there might be differences of syllabi between provincial departments therefore students must ensure that they are aware of these differences.

MATRICULATION EXEMPTION
A matriculation exemption certificate is necessary to study a degree at a South African university.

Conditional exemption:
Conditional exemptions are granted by the Joint Matriculation Board to non-matriculated candidates who are 23 years of age or older, and who have already passed at least four approved subjects. One o these subjects (not the second language) must be on HG.
