The Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching is a professional qualification offered via distance learning over four years (full-time) or five years (part-time). The programme prepares student teachers to teach learners in the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 to 6) and to enter the teaching profession as professionally qualified beginner teachers.
The purpose of the qualification is to develop teachers with a strong foundation in subject content knowledge, effective teaching competence, and a sound understanding of educational theory and practice within the South African schooling context. The programme emphasises the integrated nature of theory and practice, enabling student teachers to apply their learning meaningfully in real classroom settings.
Through a balanced combination of disciplinary knowledge, pedagogical skills, and supervised workplace-based learning, the qualification accredits the development of professional competence informed by both educational theory and subject specialisation. Graduates are equipped to teach effectively in diverse school environments and to respond thoughtfully to the social, cultural, and educational realities of South African classrooms.
This qualification is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in education from the outset of their studies, providing a solid pathway into the teaching profession.

Minimum admission requirements:
- A National Senior Certificate (NCS) certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) in four recognised NCS 20-credit subjects. Students wishing to register for the BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching) with the Endorsement: Mathematics and Natural Science and Technology are required to have passed Mathematics in the Gr 12 examination or
- Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning (prior to 2008). Students wishing to register for the BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching with the Endorsement: Mathematics and Natural Science and Technology are required to have passed Mathematics in the Gr 12 examination or
- A National Certificate Vocational (NCV), NQF Level 4 that meets the requirements as laid down for admission to bachelor’s degree study. Students wishing to register for the BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching with the Endorsement: Mathematics and Natural Science and Technology are required to have passed Mathematics in the Gr 12 examination or
- Professionally qualified teachers holding a former three-year College of Education Diploma or a National Professional Diploma in Education – (360 credits at level 5), may enrol for 300 credits of the BEd (IP), after successfully applying for assessment of prior learning or
- Professionally qualified teachers holding a former undergraduate Higher Diploma in Education or a former Further Diploma in Education (NQF Level 6), may enrol for 300 credits of the BEd (IP) after successfully applying for assessment of prior learning or
- Teachers who are in possession of a recognised certificate or diploma in education or another relevant field, may also present their qualifications for entry into a BEd with a possibility of transfer of credits, for cognate previous studies. Assessment of prior learning could also lead to entry or an advanced credit standing.

This qualification is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered on the NQF by SAQA, SAQA ID 119970.
The qualification is recognised by the Department of Education and is considered for REQV improvement.
