The Diploma in Grade R Teaching is a professional qualification offered via distance learning over three years (full-time) or four years (part-time), providing flexibility for both aspiring and practicing Grade R teachers.
This qualification has been developed to address national priorities in early childhood education, equipping students with the specialised knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence required to teach Grade R learners effectively and confidently.
The programme focuses on the holistic development of young learners and includes:
Specialisation in Home Language teaching, together with English as First Additional Language. All students also study a Second Additional Language to meet conversational language competence requirements.
The ability to identify and respond to barriers to learning in early childhood and to design appropriate teaching and learning programmes that meet diverse learner needs.
Skills to adapt teaching approaches to learners from varied backgrounds and with differing learning needs.
Supervised and assessed teaching practice, ensuring the integration of theory and practice.
Ongoing professional development to support effective teaching in Grade R classrooms.
Workplace-Integrated Learning (WIL), which is a compulsory component of the programme. Students complete four consecutive weeks (per year) of supervised teaching practice in approved schools.
Graduates of this qualification are well prepared to support early learning and development and to make a meaningful contribution to quality early childhood education in South Africa.
All study material is provided in electronic (e-book) format, with the option of including printed hard-copy materials if preferred.
Minimum admission requirements:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) which grants access to Diploma studies or
- National Certificate (Vocational) NC (V) at NQF Level 4 which grants access to Diploma studies or
- A Level 4 or level 5 Certificate in Early Childhood Development or
- A foreign qualification that is equivalent to the NSC as determined by SAQA or
- A Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) at NQF Level 4.
- Students who have completed their Senior Certificate prior to 2008 must have obtained at least four subjects on level D or higher.
- Edutel Higher Education (Pty) Ltd is accredited with CHE/HEQC.
- Edutel Higher Education (Pty) Ltd is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training until 31 December 2027 as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997. Registration certificate No. 2017/HE07/001.
- The qualification is registered on the NQF, SAQA ID 109561.
- The qualification is recognised by the Department of Education and is considered for REQV improvement.
