The Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Teaching is a specialised qualification offered via distance learning over two years, making it ideal for working educators who wish to advance their professional qualifications.
This programme is designed for teachers on REQV 13 who want to upgrade their qualifications, as well as for educators who wish to specialise in Intermediate Phase teaching. It provides an opportunity to strengthen subject knowledge and teaching practice for learners in Grades 4 to 6.
The qualification consists of eight structured modules and focuses on enhancing teachers’ capacity to engage effectively with learners, fellow educators, support staff, and parents—both at classroom and school level, and within the broader community. Graduates are equipped to contribute meaningfully to improved teaching and learning outcomes in the Intermediate Phase.
Two subject endorsements are offered:
Endorsement 1: Mathematics, Science and Technology
Endorsement 2: Life Skills and Social Sciences
Both endorsements are provide a strong knowledge base for Intermediate Phase teaching. Students develop the ability to apply theory to practice, strengthen classroom teaching skills, and prepare for further professional development in education.
All study material is provided in electronic (e-book) format, with the option of adding printed hard-copy materials if preferred.

Minimum admission requirements:
- A three-year College of Education Diploma, NQF Level 5 or
- A National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) at Level 5 or
- Advanced Certificate in Education at NQF Level 6-not specialising in the specialisation subjects of the chosen endorsement Intermediate Phase Teaching or
- A former undergraduate Higher Diploma in Education or
- A former Further Diploma in Education-not specialising in the chosen subjects of specialisation in Intermediate Phase Teaching or
- A foreign qualification that is equivalent to a professional teaching qualification at Level 5
- A professional Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree-not specialising in the chosen subjects of specialisation in Intermediate Phase Teaching or
- A Bachelor’s degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education PGCE- not specialising in the chosen subjects of specialisation in Intermediate Phase Teaching or
- University Education Diploma, NQF Level 5 or
- Teachers who enrol for the qualification must provide proof that they either teach in the Intermediate Phase or that they have access to an Intermediate Phase classroom to teach the phase for the duration of the four weeks of workplace integrated learning. Students will complete their WIL in the second semester of the second year.
This qualification is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered on the NQF by SAQA, SAQA ID 120903.
This qualification is approved by CHE and TEPEC.
