We’ve noticed that many prospective students are confused about the difference between a Higher Certificate and an Advanced Certificate. Let’s clarify this.
Higher Certificate
A Higher Certificate is an entry-level qualification.
- Usually taken after Grade 12 (Matric)
- Designed to introduce you to a specific field of study
- Focuses on foundational knowledge and basic skills
- Typically at NQF Level 5
It is suitable if you:
- Do not meet the requirements for a diploma or degree
- Want to build foundational knowledge
- Are starting your academic journey
Advanced Certificate
An Advanced Certificate is a post-level qualification.
- Taken after completing a Diploma or Degree
- Designed to deepen or specialise your existing knowledge
- Builds on prior learning and experience
- Typically at NQF Level 6
It is suitable if you:
- Already have a qualification
- Want to specialise in a specific area
- Need additional credentials for career growth
Key Difference
- Higher Certificate = Entry-level qualification
- Advanced Certificate = Further or specialised qualification after prior studies
